How SSDI Benefits Are Calculated

Your SSDI payment is based primarily on your covered earnings record, not a flat amount assigned to a diagnosis. SSA’s estimate is a better starting point than a national average or an online maximum. The final amount can also reflect offsets, entitlement dates, and other claim-specific rules.

Start With Your Earnings Record

Review the earnings recorded in your Social Security account. Missing or incorrect covered wages or self-employment income can affect eligibility and the calculation. Gather supporting records if something appears wrong and ask SSA how to request a correction.

SSDI uses a formula involving average indexed monthly earnings and a primary insurance amount. Disability computations can involve different numbers of earnings years depending on the worker’s circumstances. Do not assume that a retirement estimate or a simple average of recent paychecks is the disability amount.

Use The Correct Formula Year

The standard primary-insurance-amount percentages are 90%, 32%, and 15%. The dollar bend points change by year, but those percentages do not simply change annually. The appropriate eligibility year matters, followed by applicable cost-of-living adjustments.

For first eligibility in 2026, the standard bend points are $1,286 and $7,749. These are formula inputs, not minimum or maximum monthly disability payments. Replacing every older claimant’s formula with the current year’s bend points would produce misleading estimates.

Account For Other Benefits And Deductions

Workers’ compensation and certain public disability benefits can reduce SSDI under applicable offset rules. Private disability policies can have their own coordination provisions, which should not be confused with SSA’s formula. Supply information about payments and settlements when requested.

The deposit may also differ from the gross benefit because of premiums, withholding, recovery of an overpayment, or other adjustments. When comparing an award to an estimate, distinguish the gross monthly entitlement from the amount actually received.

Family Benefits And Practical Next Steps

Certain family members may qualify on a disabled worker’s record, subject to relationship requirements and a family maximum. The disabled-worker family maximum is not the same calculation as the retirement or survivor maximum. It is not safe to add a fixed percentage for every family member.

Keep your estimate, earnings record, other-benefit notices, and award letter together. Ask SSA to explain the applicable calculation if they do not align. Label any example as illustrative, and avoid planning essential expenses around an unverified payment estimate or the largest number shown in an advertisement.
