Working During An Application
SSA considers substantial gainful activity and evidence of functional ability. Earnings below the guideline do not establish disability, and earnings above it may need analysis of subsidies, allowable expenses, or another applicable rule. Self-employment requires particular attention to duties and services.
Keep records of hours, pay, assistance, absences, and reasons work changed or stopped. An unsuccessful work attempt has specific criteria; it is not simply any job that was difficult or any work below SGA. Describe the actual circumstances rather than selecting a label first.
SSDI Trial Work And Reentitlement
Eligible SSDI beneficiaries can test work during a trial work period, generally involving nine service months within a rolling 60-month period. In 2026, earnings over $1,210 generally count toward a service month; self-employment also has an hours-based rule. The trial-work amount is different from SGA.
A 36-month extended period of eligibility generally follows the trial work period. Payment rules involve SGA, a cessation determination, and applicable grace-period provisions. It is too simple to say that every month above SGA always ends all benefits immediately. Ask SSA to identify the work-incentive months already used.
SSI Uses Different Rules
SSI does not have the SSDI trial work period. Earned-income exclusions and other work incentives may allow some payment or continued Medicaid eligibility while working. The result depends on countable income and other requirements, not just gross wages compared with an SSDI threshold.
When both programs are involved, one work change can affect them differently. Report accurately to the appropriate program and keep wage records. Do not assume that updating one employer record or telling another benefits agency satisfies every SSA reporting duty.
If Work Later Becomes Unsustainable
Expedited reinstatement may be available after qualifying work-related termination, generally when requested within five years of termination of entitlement, with additional medical and program requirements. The ordinary anchor is not simply your last paid month.
Review notices before deciding whether a new application, reinstatement request, or another action is appropriate. Work plans should account for health coverage as well as cash payments. Individual benefits counseling can help identify the actual rules without promising that a particular number of hours will always be safe.
