Separate Technical And Medical Issues
An SSDI denial can concern insufficient work credits, the date last insured, or work activity. SSI can involve countable income, resources, or other eligibility requirements. Those issues need different evidence from a disagreement about your medical limitations.
Check whether SSA made a medical determination at all. If the problem is an inaccurate earnings record, gather the relevant wage or self-employment information. If the issue concerns disability before insured status expired, evidence about the earlier period may be essential even if your health has since worsened.
Understand A Medical Denial
SSA may find that the evidence does not establish a severe impairment of sufficient duration, or that you retain the capacity for past or other work. Read the notice carefully instead of assuming that a diagnosis was ignored simply because the claim was denied.
Not meeting or medically equaling a listing ordinarily leads to further analysis of residual functional capacity and vocational factors. It is not, by itself, a step-three denial. Your next submission may need to explain sustained function rather than repeat the name of the condition.
Look For Gaps And Misunderstandings
Check whether the file includes the relevant providers, tests, treatment periods, and medication effects. Review descriptions of past jobs. A title such as “manager” does not identify how much lifting, walking, concentration, or direct work a job required.
Describe activities with their limits. Shopping with assistance, resting afterward, or performing a chore occasionally may differ from doing comparable tasks consistently at work. Explain treatment barriers such as cost or transportation accurately. Do not exaggerate symptoms or hide work to make the record appear stronger.
Choose The Next Step Promptly
Read the appeal instructions and preserve the deadline while evaluating what needs correction. For an ordinary initial disability denial, reconsideration is generally the next stage, followed by a hearing if reconsideration is unfavorable.
A new application is not always a substitute for an appeal and can raise different timing issues. Keep the denial, its envelope if available, prior submissions, and proof of any appeal. Focus the review on the actual reasons given and the evidence needed to address them.
