West Virginia SSDI Resident Resources

West Virginia’s PATH portal helps residents explore state assistance, while federal disability applications start with Social Security. This guide explains the Disability Determination Section’s role, what a benefits screening can tell you, and how to manage medical records and household paperwork separately.

Start The Federal Claim With SSA

The West Virginia Division of Rehabilitation Services’ Disability Determination Section reviews Social Security disability and SSI claims for SSA. Apply through Social Security, which checks nonmedical requirements and sends appropriate claims for medical development. Use the examiner identified on later correspondence for evidence requests. List all relevant treating sources and explain the limitations affecting work. An inquiry about the division’s vocational services is a different task from filing for federal cash benefits; clarify which process you are trying to begin.

Use PATH For The Relevant State Program

The official West Virginia PATH portal includes health coverage, food and nutrition, and family assistance information. Review the benefit you need and follow its application instructions. Household composition, income, and other facts may be required separately from the medical record for SSA. Keep copies of what you submit and read later requests for verification. If several benefits are involved, record which ones you selected rather than assuming the portal enrolled you in every available program.

Distinguish Screening From An Application

PATH’s Benefit Finder states that screening results are not an official eligibility decision. A possible match is a reason to explore an application, not proof that benefits will be awarded. The PATH FAQ explains account and application functions, including the difference between screening and submitting an application. If you cannot complete a step, seek help with that particular action. Keep confirmation when an application is actually submitted, and follow up on any remaining interview or document requirements.

Include Care Beyond Your Immediate Community

If you receive care in a neighboring state or travel to a specialist, include those providers and facilities in your medical history. List approximate dates and the type of care received. Explain any gaps in treatment and changes in work activity accurately. Describe what tasks you can perform only with help, extra time, or breaks, as well as limits on sustained activity. If an examiner schedules a visit, raise transportation or communication difficulties promptly rather than leaving the request unanswered.

Does Updating PATH Update My Federal Claim?

Do not assume it does. Follow SSA’s instructions for changes relevant to the federal claim and PATH’s instructions for state benefits. Keep separate case references, response dates, and submission records. If SSA issues a denial, use the appeal procedure stated in that notice; a PATH screening or state application does not file a federal appeal. For a state-program decision, follow its own review instructions. Ask for clarification promptly when a notice is unclear, while continuing to meet the tasks due in other pending cases.
