Los Angeles Resources And Access

Los Angeles County describes Countywide Benefits Entitlement Services Team, or CBEST, as benefits advocacy connected to its General Relief program for disabled people experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Its work can involve applications for federal disability benefits and other benefit programs, along with connections to care. Ask DPSS about screening and referral requirements before assuming eligibility. Bring existing notices and identify any approaching deadline so intake staff can understand the immediate issue.

Organize Local Care And Contacts

When treatment is spread across Los Angeles County facilities, organize records by provider and dates of care. A hospital discharge summary may not include later outpatient treatment. Maintain separate folders for EDD, county assistance, and Social Security so a request from one program does not get mistaken for a response to another.

For a county advocacy referral, explain any existing federal application or appeal so the helper can identify its stage. Do not start a duplicate application merely because a new organization becomes involved. Ask which person will track the next deadline and how you will receive updates.

Prepare For The Next Step

Before applying, make a list of your treating providers, approximate treatment dates, medications, and the work tasks affected by your condition. Describe concrete limits and changes over time. Keep copies of submissions and a dated record of contacts. Use SSA’s current office locator to confirm federal office information and appointment instructions.

SSDI uses federal disability and work-history requirements. State residence or a diagnosis alone does not establish eligibility; review SSA’s qualification guidance for the governing framework. If a decision is unfavorable, read the notice immediately and follow its appeal instructions. Asking a community organization for help does not itself submit an appeal. When more than one program is involved, track each notice, deadline, and requested document separately.
