Start The Claim And Identify The Reviewer

Maryland Disability Determination Services is within the Division of Rehabilitation Services. It makes medical determinations for Social Security disability claims under federal rules. That medical review is distinct from vocational rehabilitation and from state cash assistance. Begin the SSDI application with SSA, then respond to the reviewer identified in your claim notices. Do not assume that documents submitted for a Maryland assistance program have also reached the federal disability file.

Explore Separate State Assistance

Maryland's Temporary Disability Assistance Program provides assistance to qualifying low-income adults with disabilities who do not have dependent children. It can be relevant during a period of disability or while a federal disability application is pending. Medical verification and other program conditions apply; longer-term cases may involve an SSI application requirement. Ask the local Department of Social Services about the correct application route and current rules rather than assuming SSDI filing establishes TDAP eligibility.

Baltimore Resources And Access

Baltimore City and Baltimore County are distinct jurisdictions, a useful distinction when choosing a local assistance office or legal aid intake route. Maryland Legal Aid's finder can direct residents by location. Explain whether the issue concerns a federal disability decision, state assistance, housing, or another civil matter. The organization screens for eligibility and available services. Keep the full notice available during intake, including the date and appeal instructions, and identify your jurisdiction clearly.

Organize Local Care And Contacts

If a household moves between Baltimore City and the surrounding county, ask each benefits agency how to update its records. Changing the address with one office should not be assumed to update every other program. Medical evidence can come from providers in either jurisdiction; list the actual treatment locations and dates so records can be requested accurately.

When asking about TDAP, disclose any pending SSI or SSDI application accurately and ask what follow-up documentation the program requires. Keep a copy of any medical report requested for state assistance. Its completion does not establish that the same report was received by the federal disability examiner.

SSDI uses federal disability and work-history requirements. State residence or a diagnosis alone does not establish eligibility; review SSA’s qualification guidance for the governing framework. If a decision is unfavorable, read the notice immediately and follow its appeal instructions. Asking a community organization for help does not itself submit an appeal. When more than one program is involved, track each notice, deadline, and requested document separately.
