The Department of Transitional Assistance administers Emergency Aid to the Elderly, Disabled and Children, or EAEDC. It provides assistance to people who meet specified categories and financial requirements, including some people with disabilities. Ask DTA which category and supporting documents apply to your household. EAEDC is separate from federal SSDI and SSI. A DTA request should be answered through its designated channel even if you have already submitted similar material to Social Security.

Organize Local Care And Contacts

Boston-area medical care may involve separate hospital, specialist, and community health center records. Create a provider list even when the organizations share a patient portal. Follow the DDS examiner's request for releases and additional information. For an SSA visit, use the current federal locator; do not rely on copied street addresses or old opening hours.

If an EAEDC issue and a federal claim are both pending, describe them as separate matters at legal intake. Ask which matter an organization can address and which steps remain your responsibility. Maintain separate copies of DTA and DDS requests so their similar subject matter does not obscure different deadlines.

Prepare For The Next Step

Before applying, make a list of your treating providers, approximate treatment dates, medications, and the work tasks affected by your condition. Describe concrete limits and changes over time. Keep copies of submissions and a dated record of contacts. Use SSA’s current office locator to confirm federal office information and appointment instructions.

SSDI uses federal disability and work-history requirements. State residence or a diagnosis alone does not establish eligibility; review SSA’s qualification guidance for the governing framework. If a decision is unfavorable, read the notice immediately and follow its appeal instructions. Asking a community organization for help does not itself submit an appeal. When more than one program is involved, track each notice, deadline, and requested document separately.
